October 20: The Fall Feasts

-The Symbol of Water

Water was crucial during Israel’s journey, first the parting of the Sea and then as they trudged through the desert.

Psalm 78:12-16

Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,
in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;
and He made the waters stand up like a heap.

In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
and all the night with a light of fire.

He split the rocks in the wilderness,
and gave them drink in abundance like the depths.

He also brought streams out of the rock,
and caused waters to run down like rivers.

Eventually an elaborate ritual developed called “The Water Libation.” Tradition says, “You haven’t known joy until you have seen the Water Libation”

Isaiah 12: 1-3

And in that day you will say:

“O Lord, I will praise You;
though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.

Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid;
‘For Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song;
He also has become my salvation.’”

Therefore with joy you will draw water
from the wells of salvation.

The Hebrew word for “salvation” is הַיְשׁוּעָֽהfrom which we get the Hebrew name of Jesus, יְשׁוּעָה[yeshua]. Only Yeshua gives living water.

golden pitcher
Each day during the Feast, the priests made a procession from the Temple to the Pool of Siloam, where they drew from its water using golden pitchers. The procession returned to the Temple Mount, accompanied by blasts from silver trumpets. There they met other priests who were carrying golden pitchers of wine. The priests then poured their libations through two silver funnels into the base of the altar, accompanied by the shouts of the worshippers, encouraging them to lift their hands so that all could see the pouring. This ceremony was based on the prophesy of Isaiah 12:3. It was said that one has never seen joy until he has seen the Water-Pouring.
